Dia de Muertos en San Mateo Xalpa

El poblado de San Mateo Xalpa se encuentra al sur de la Ciudad de México, entre Milpa Alta y el Ajusco, y aunque está considerado como parte del D.F., tiene aún muchos razgos rurales. Y, por lo mísmo, conserva muchas de sus tradiciones. La Casa de Cultura del lugar organiza un gran evento con motivo del día de muertos. De hecho los preparativos duran un año. Y mis queridos amigos del Colectivo Arte Consciente en la Fama me invitaron a acompañarlos al evento.

Dos enormes calaveras tan altas como el edificio mísmo flanqueaban la entrada. Dentro, cada cuarto de la cas de cultura se había transformado en un altar. En todos los cuartos había calaveras hechas de cartón y la luz era muy tenue. En el recibidor, las calaveras representaban escenas de la vida cotidiana, unos compadres jugando dominó, una señora haciendo tortillas, unas mujeres platicando, otros tomando. Había uno dedicado a la etapa prehispánica, donde se escenificaba un entierro a la usanza mexica. El muerto estaba envuelto en un petate, sobre de el, su pectoral y demás adornos. A su alrededor se encontraban elementos como el maíz, y otros granos, caracoles, dos enormes piedras labradas con forma de calavera y una enorme pieza de cartonería representando a Mictlantecuhtli deidad mexica del mictlan, el inframundo. Resultaba impresionante. En las paredes varios textos explicaban precisamente la concepción prehispánica del mictlán.

En otro cuarto encontramos un altar dedicado a la éoca colonial donde los elementos del catolicísmo eran los predominantes. Varias calaveras de cartonería representaban vestidos y usanzas de la éoca. Las principales eran una monja y un noble señor. En las paredes se contaba la historia de Don Juan Tenório, obra de José Zorrilla, en la que Don Juan Tenorio enamora a una novicia dulce e inocente, Doña Inés, solo para ganar una apuesta y luego le rompió el corazón, lo que provoca que ella muera de amor.

Otro altar estaba dedicado al pintor Francisco Goitia, originario de Zacatecas. Este pintor fue parte de la generación de artistas donde encontramos a Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Orozco y otros, pero no le entró al muralismo ni se acomodó en la corriente predomnante. Viajo a España y tambien vivió el terrible periodo de la Revolución Mexicana, siguiendo a Villa y a su ejército. En sus últimos años vivión en la zona de Xochimilco, alejado de la vida cultural de la ciudad, donde hubiera podido gozar del prestigio, la fama y los placeres que otros artistas de su generación si disfrutaron. En cambio vivió en un jacal (choza) que el mísmo construyo. Por eso los lugareños le tenían mucho cariño.

Un enorme y colorido altar decoraba el patio principal. Ahí ancianos y cronistas hablaron sobre tradiciones perdidas, o platicaron como se celebraba el día de muertos en su infancia. Se contaron muchas leyendas y cuentos de espanto. El diablo, la llorona, las brujas, las bolas de fuego, los nahuales; que eran brujos que se transformaban en animales, el perro negro, jinetes sin cabeza, o el charro negro, fantasmas, el muerto y su terrible alarido. El pulque y el aguardiente estaba presente en muchas de estas historias, la mayoría de las apariciones les sucedían a borrachos que venían caminando de noche.... mira que casualidad. La gente también partcicipó y contó sus propias experiencias sobrenaturales, o historias que a su vez les habían contados sus abuelos. Otras historias eran sobre la muerte. En algunas la muerte es un personaje terrible, en otras es sabio e incluso compasivo pues puede ayudar a la gente. Incluso en algunas es burlada por gente muy astuta.

Afuera, la calle era un carnaval, había comida, pan de muerto, dulces, tamales, ponche, tacos, quesadillas, la gente iba y venía disfrazados de los más clásicos estereotipos del jalogüin: vampiros, hombres lobo, momias, brujas; también había luchadores, personajes de cómic, y obviamente muchas calaveras y claro, varias Catrinas. Mi favorita fue una chica que iba vestida al estilo gótico. Se veía que no era su disfraz, que esa era su vestimenta normal; ropa negra, botas, ojos muy delineados, solo que para esta ocasión se había dibujado un hilillo de sangre que escurría de su boca y bajaba por el cuello.... se veía hermosa.

San Mateo Xalpa is a town south of Mexico city which still conserves a lot of it's rural lifestyle and therefore, many of it's traditions. The ' House of Culture' there organizes a huge event for this season. It lasts two days. Actually the Dia de muertos festivities is their main event of the year. Some friends of mine were invited to show some of their work and they were kind enough to bring me alone.

At the entrance of the building there were two huge paper skulls as high as the building it self. In the reception there were many common life scenes, a woman making tortillas, some compadres playing domino, or drinking some women dressed in colorful ways. Each of the rooms had been turned into ' ofrendas'. In each of these rooms there were skulls made with paper or ' cartonería'. This is a traditional art which employes paper and wheat past to create skelletons, some of them even life size. These are decorated with colors or dressed. The light was very dim, most of it came from ' veladoras' short candles placed inside glasses. Everything was very colorful and adorned with paper most of it orange and purple.

One of hese rooms was dedicated to the mictlán, the prehispánic conception of the underworld. There was a huge and very impressive representation of Mictlantecuhtli, the underworld's deity. There was a scene of a burial made the ancient way, the body wrapped up in a mat called ' petate'. The walls displayed some texts explaining precisely what the mictlan is and talking about the journey the deceased ones had to make there. Also there were many prehispanic crafts and elements. Another room was dedicated to the colonial period. There the paper skulls represented the ways of those times and the symbols were more related to the catholic tradition. Here the walls told the story of hte play ' Don Juan Tenorio,' wrote by José Zorrilla. It's a bout a man that makes a young girl become in love with him, just to win a bet he has made with another man. She is about to become a nun and yes, she falls in love. It has a tragic ending of course, but in the end love and faith prevail.

Another ofrenda was dedicated to Francisco Goitia, a painter which belonged to the same generation that Frida Kahlo and Diego rivera did, but that choose to live apart from the fame and luxury. He was born in Zacatecas, traveled to Spain and traveled along Villa's army during the revolution. During his last years he refused to enjoy the fame and privilegdes that his comrades were having, and instead he chose to live outside the city, among indigenous people, in a cabin that he himself made. The region where he retired was precisely south of hte city, that's why people around here is fond on him.

Perhaps the best of all was happening in the main hall. There the elders of the region, story tellers and historycians were talking to the people gathered there. THey talked about traditions, about how the cultural invasion is displacing the Dia de Muertos festivities, they talked about the prehispanic rites and believes. And they told a lot of legends and tales. About death, and ghosts, witches, fireballs, sorcery, the devil, La Llorona ( the crying lady), the deceased one and his terrible scream, black dogs with fire in their eyes, headless horsemen, the dark ' charro,' and about wizards that can transform themselves in to animals like crows, dogs, jaguars... or even crippled donkeys. Many of these stories included booze and pulque an alcoholic beverage very traditional that you can only find in central México. Other legends were from the colonial period and in some of htem death wasn't a terrible being, but could also be a benevolent one giving advices or telling secrets, some were ven funny and in a few of them, death could be deceived by very cleaver people.

Outside there was a carnival, lots of food, traditional candies, ' pan de muerto' or ' bread of dead,' and ponche, a hot and sweet drink made with fruit, At a late hour, people in disguisses flooded the streets. Of course there were the usual characters from Halloween, wiitches, ghosts, mummies, werewolves, but also you could see wrestlers, comic characters, lots of skelletons and of course, many elegant and colorful Catrinas. My favourite one was a cute girl dressed in a gothic style; black clothes, high boots, heavy make up around the eyes... It was clear that she wasn't in disguise, that was her every day wardrobe, but for this ocasion, she painted a red thin line of blood, driping from her mouth and going down her neck... she looked really georgeous.
